This weekend in Vancouver is reserved for a little special someone, that father figure in your life who appreciates his whisky and scotch, and who doesn’t want no g-damn flowers for his special day! That’s right, this weekend is Father’s Day, and while it’s only celebrated on one day (Sunday), why not spend all weekend obeying his every whim!? (Oh right, because that would suck). Instead, here are some great ideas on how to entertain yourself and your father this weekend in Vancouver:

Catch a Late Night Movie at Rio Theatre

Bueller? Bueller? The late night movies at The Rio Theatre are the place to be on Friday nights with admission only costing $8 or $6 in costume and with BEER. Today, the movie being shown is Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, a classic that reminds us all that sometimes creating an elaborate plan to take a sick day is really worth it in the end. Although, be careful when stealing your father’s really expensive car. More information here!

Get Down and Draw at Vancouver Draw Down

The Vancouver Draw Down celebrates creativity and challenges everyday ideas about what drawing is and what it can do. Over 35 FREE drawing workshops will take place across the city in community centres, museums, art galleries, neighbourhood houses and public parks. More information here!

Feel The RUSH: Race & Urban Scavenger Hunt

Teams of 2 will scour the city of Vancouver, deciphering clues to help them complete a predetermined number of Checkpoint Challenges at unknown locations. The challenges are designed to test teams’ limits, both mentally and physically, while also being fun and entertaining. The first team to complete the race wins a trip for two around the world; but The RUSH is about more than crossing the finish line – it is about the journey and the chance to save lives and change your own! More information here!

Observe or Take Part in the World Naked Bike Ride

Join tens of thousands of happy naked cyclists in the greatest celebration of human powered happiness the world has ever seen. Dress code: Bare as you dare. If you want you can come wearing scuba gear. Body painting and performances will take place before the ride. Arrive between 12 Noon and 2:00pm to catch some of the action and some of the paint! A picnic following the ride will be hosted by niftynude.org. The ride, pre and post-ride activities are all free. More information here!

Takeover the Burrard Hotel

The Burrard Hotel is taking a page out of the Waldorf Hotel’s success story by hosting a “Hotel Takeover” on June 15th where it will be transformed for a one-night fundraiser in celebration of skateboarding, music, arts and culture. The hotel takeover will include a skateboard ramp, deejays, art installations, food, and live music for this one-night festival of fun. More information here!

Celebrate MEAT at Brewery & the Beast: A Festival of Meat

Is it a coincidence this event is being held on Father’s Day? We think not! Our regions finest chefs demonstrate their skill and passion for meat through a wide variety of inspired creations. Whole pig & lamb roasts, house-made sausage, charcuterie, smoked meats, ethnic-inspired dishes, classic BBQ, and other full-flavored exotic foods will be featured at Brewery & The Beast. Unfortunately, this event is already sold out – so hopefully you got your tickets when we first wrote about this glorious occasion. (Or, you can try hanging around outside the gates and try and convince someone to let you in). More information here!

There are a lot of festivals around town that sound really exciting, but end up being really boring. There’s only so much street food you can eat, bad musicians you can listen to, and screaming children you can tolerate. Vancouver Car Free Day is different. This festival manages to entertain, educate and enlighten! (Okay, maybe not all those things – but alliteration is awesome). Plus, it’s kind of like a city-wide protest against cars, and that’s pretty cool.

The Car Free Day in Vancouver takes place on Sunday, June 16th (Father’s Day!) in four neighborhoods around Vancouver. Each area hosts their own distinct car free party with a little something different at each location.

On Main Street, the party stretches all the way from Broadway to 30th and lasts from noon until 7pm. Best of all, their motto is “Free of charge. Free of boring corporate stuff. Free of cars”. We love being free of boring corporate stuff! Main Street’s Car Free Day is promising “Several mini-festivals, over a dozen community supported stages with dozens of bands, a full kids zone and other kids activities throughout the site. Things like kids’ yoga, button making, art zones, bike lessons, and chalk art. Three full artisan markets, a fashion show, roller derby, dance zones, as well as hundreds of non-profits, local artisans and businesses.” Nice!

On Commercial Drive, the birthplace of Car Free Day, festivities will take over Venables to North Grandview Highway and central Valley Greenway Bike Lane, from noon until 7pm. Activities will include “Frying fish over fire, parading drummers, healing gardens, DJs spinning beats and all of your friends and neighbours hanging out.” Expect roller discos, dancing, yarn bombing, and other crazy stuff that makes Commercial Drive so well known.

In the West End, Celebrate Car Free Day in Vancouver on Denman Street between Davie and Robson from 12:00pm to 6:00pm. There will be a pet parade, a penny drive, live music at Central Bistro at Comox, and other fun things.

In Kitsilano, things are being done a bit differently. Instead of closing off a major street, people throughout Kits will be hosting block parties with their neighbours. The block parties are as individual as the people who pull them together. Some have dancing, some have music, some have couches, chairs and carpets in the middle of the street and some share chips and a drink together! All of them are a fun, relaxing chance to hang out with the people who live on your street. The 2013 block parties will take place on Saturday, June 15th and Sunday, June 16th. Here’s a list of the block parties happening.

Car Free Day is also 100% run by volunteers. If you’d like to help out, they are still looking for people! Click here for more information.

Woah, second week in June, you are being really good to us. The sun’s shining (and scheduled to keep shining), the weather’s warming up, and the event schedule is blowing up!

There’s so much going on in the next few days, we felt like we had to make a whole new blog post dedicated just to all this cool stuff as a reminder to get out and do something! Here’s what’s going on:

Thursday, June 6th: Letter Writing @ The Assembly of Text

We are huge fans of writing at BoredinVancouver (as you can tell from our text-heavy blog entries), and love the idea of a letter writing club. When was the last time you received a letter in the mail that wasn’t a bill?? When was the last time you sent a letter?? It’s a dying art, but somebody’s got to resuscitate it! And that could be you! Head to the Letter Writing Club at the cutest store ever (3934 Main Street) and enjoy some tea and biscuits, pleasant conversation, and the lovely background music of the clackity-clack-clack of typewriters.

Thursday, June 6th to Sunday, June 9th: Music Waste Festival

If letter writing ain’t your cup o’ tea, hit up a venue around town to take in the sights and sounds of the Music Waste Festival that’s happening at various happening joints. The Music Waste Festival offers over 50 music performances, as well as comedy and art shows. Best of all an all-access pass is only $15! Get Wasted!

Friday, June 7th: Perogy Night

It’s Perogy night in Canada! (cue hockey night in Canada theme song) Perogy Night is hosted at the Ukranian Hall near Main Street and it has some of the best gosh darn food that you’ll ever taste! It’s cheap, it’s appetizing, it’s got a giant bowl of sour cream… What more do you need to know!?

Friday, June 7th to Sunday, June 9th: In the House Festival

The In the House Festival is like a gigantic, conjoined house party taking place in 13 houses around Napier and Victoria near the Commercial Drive area. It’s got music, dance, comedy, and even a freakin’ circus! Ticket prices range from $15 per show to $95 for a weekend pass, and can be purchased online or at Highlife Records (1317 Commercial Drive).

Friday, June 7th: Old Boy @ Rio Theatre

From what we’ve heard, Old Boy is a freaking crazy movie. The film follows the story of one Oh Dae-su, who is locked in a hotel room for 15 years without knowing his captor’s motives. When he is finally released, Dae-su finds himself still trapped in a web of conspiracy and violence. His own quest for vengeance becomes tied in with romance when he falls for an attractive sushi chef. Crazy, right!? Old Boy is playing on the big screens of Rio Theatre on Friday for their Late Night Movies special which is incredibly cheap ($8 or $6 in costume) and has beer. Booyah.

Saturday, June 8th: Kite Festival

There’s something wonderful about flying a kite. The feeling of getting something flat to rise into the sky and float around for awhile is great. The Vancouver Kite Festival is happening this weekend at Vanier Park in Vancouver. You don’t even have to fly a kite, you can just sit on the grass and stare at the kite-masters at work. How can they possibly control 10 strings at once?! How are they not hitting each other!? The answer to these questions and many more may be answered at the Kite Festival.

Sunday, June 9th: Italian Day on Commercial Drive

Had to end it off with the most exciting event of all, Italian Day on Commercial Drive! Italian Day on The Drive embraces everything that is Italian: food, music, fashion, dance, art, sport, history and community. And for Italian Day 2013 – the Italian Day Festival Society is excited to offer ‘a first’ in the form of a street festival to the city of Vancouver: the world famous ‘Carnevale di Venezia’ when the event’s ‘dolce vita’ signature extends itself to Venice. In the heart of Vancouver’s ‘Little Italy’, The Drive will come alive ‘Venetian style’ with masks, costumes, street entertainers, music, food, fashion, contests and more!

This isn’t even ALL the events that are happening in Vancouver the next few days. This is just the HIGHLIGHTS!!! If you want to read the full list, check out our June Events in Vancouver Post.

According to Wikipedia (the most credible of sources), “the Music Waste Festival began in 1994 as a protest against the entry fees of the corporate-sponsored New Music West Festival. Since the initial one night stand against the corporate-sponsored New Music West festival, Music Waste has become an integral part of the Vancouver music scene, highlighting the most innovative and exciting bands of Vancouver and surrounding areas.”

Awesome!

Plus, to make the festival as accessible as possible, you only have to buy one $15 all-access pass to be able to pack in as many shows as you possibly can. The venues are also nice and close, so you won’t have to waste valuable music-listening time waiting for the skytrain to Surrey.

The festival also has some of the coolest posters ever.

This year, Music Waste is featuring well over 50 bands performing in venues like Pat’s Pub, Electric Owl, Zoo Zhop, The Astoria, and more. On top of that, there’s also comedy acts and art shows each night. The full schedule can be found here.

Check out this freaking awesome independent festival starting on Thursday and cram in as much music, comedy and art as you possibly can! Get (music) wasted!

Depending on which weather report you want to believe, or which report is actually right (none of them), it’s looking like this weekend will have some sun with rain on it. Okay, Vancouver. Whatever. Luckily, no matter what the weather is, there are lots of fun things happening this weekend.

Here’s how to keep yourself entertained Friday, Saturday and Sunday…

Watch bikers take over the streets at Critical Mass – On the last Friday of every month, bikers of all walks of life gather at the Vancouver Art Gallery at 6pm to take over the streets with their bikes. The summer months are definitely the best times to participate in Critical Mass, as there can be over 1000 bikers at one time. Have you ever sat in the middle of the Lions Gate Bridge while drivers give you death glares and wonder what the hell is going on? It’s a great experience and a perfect way to end the Bike to Work Week. Get a bike! (more information)

Watch girls run into each other at Roller Derby – Roller derby has exploded in popularity in the last few years, and if you haven’t witnessed the ferocious energy and confusion of a roller derby bout – it’s time. On Saturday, June 1st, Vancouver’s Terminal City All-Stars are taking on the London Rollergirls, all the way from – you guessed it – London! This international showdown will be starting at 7:30 at The Minoru Arena in Richmond. Tickets cost $20 at the door, $15 online. (more information)

Watch people make incredible things at Mini Maker Faire – Maker culture is based on the principle that ordinary people can create extrordinary things. The Mini Maker Faire is a DIY Festival for people who make anything from knitting creations to large sculptures to fire-based monstrosities. Whatever you feel passionate about, you’re invited to show off. Attending the Mini Maker Faire is an exciting, in the manner that it can get you excited over something new. Maybe you never knew that you’ve always wanted to learn how to tie knots, maybe you are the best spinning bicycle art participant in the world. In short – the Mini Maker Faire is an adventure in the out-of-the-ordinary. The fair is being held on Saturday and Sunday at the PNE Forum. Tickets cost $15. (more information)

Watch people get dirty at The Spartan Race – The Spartan Race, held on Mount Seymour is a grueling 5KM obstacle race that is sprinkled with “fun” obstacles that typically include running through fire, walking through mud, crawling through mud, climbing up ropes, and all that other fun crap that crazy people seem to enjoy so much. Registration looks like it is still open (?) until the race starts tomorrow at 8:30 and goes until 3:30. (more information)

Watch people take off their Hats in Burnaby – The Hat’s Off Day in Burnaby is a street festival wherenin Burnaby Heights merchants “take their hats off” to their community and their customers, and the entire Heights community celebrates together. It’s a huge, one-day extravaganza featuring a colorful main-street style parade with real local flavor, followed by a big street party. Hastings Street between Boundary Road and Gamma Avenue is shut down, and the streets are packed with families, friends, neighbors, and merchants.

Watch some sluts take a walk – SlutWalk Vancouver is a satellite of SlutWalk Toronto, a march started in 2011 to combat a disturbingly common trend of victim-blaming and slut-shaming among the police, media, and court system. SlutWalk is committed to dispelling the myth that sexual assault victims are to blame for placing themselves in vulnerable situations; either through their choice of dress, consumption of alcohol, or their sexual history. We’re passionate about fighting for a world where women are free to express their sexuality in whatever way they choose, where they are free to walk the streets without fear of being attacked, and where they are free to speak about an assault without being blamed. Participants in the SlutWalk Vancouver meet at 12pm at the Vancouver Art Gallery. (more information)
